HERE
BY DARYL LISA FAZIO
A New Comedy-Drama about Healthcare, Disability, Neurodivergence, and Women…and just being human…

LORI ACKERMAN:
I’ve never met a doctor like you.
DR. PAMELA SLUSARSKI:
I can’t tell how you mean that.

Turns out medical answers aren’t just about science…
they’re about seeing the human being right in front of you…

ABOUT THE PLAY
Lori Ackerman is a resilient, resourceful spark plug of a mom and truck driver. She’s also got a chronic undiagnosed illness. She’s also been labeled by doctors as “hysterical,” and not the funny kind. When Lori encounters brilliant but struggling neurodiverse family physician Dr. Pamela Slusarski, the two embark on a fact-finding mission that uncovers not just Lori’s truth, but Pamela’s as well, in the process revealing a wonderfully peculiar connection.
WHAT ARE WE DOING?
We’re self-producing, taking this play on tour on demand, to both theatre and non-theatre venues. In Atlanta and beyond. We want it to reach a broad spectrum of people, including non-Theatre-goers. The plan is for performances to be Pay-What-You-Can, which can also mean you pay zero dollars. This “business plan” also means that, to tell our story, we’ll need donations for artist salaries, props, travel, and, if applicable, space rental (though we hope a lot of spaces are so out-of-the-norm—churches, libraries, book stores, cafes, backyards, you name it—that there is no rental fee, and that we might simply…collide with audiences).
PLAY SPECS
RUN TIME: 70 minutes
CAST SIZE: 2
TECHNICAL NEEDS: None—we can do with as much or as little as a setting has available; the play is presented with all the strings and tape and inner gears showing, and that’s part of the vulnerability and accessibility inherent to the story
AGE APPROPRIATENESS: 13+ • There is very mild language and grown-up themes around illness.
OPTIONAL TALKBACK: we can answer questions about the art-making process, as well as disability and chronic illness (the play, though not a true story, is inspired by Fazio’s own experiences as a disabled patient seeking a diagnosis, as well as her research of other chronically ill women).
